The Pennsylvania Heartland Unit of the Herb Society of America
The Pennsylvania Heartland Herb Society was initially formed from the Herb Haus study group in 1982 and applied for unit status with The Herb Society of America, Inc. on January 2, 1985 for the purpose of studying and sharing the history, horticulture, and uses of herbs. As a unit of The Herb Society of America, Inc., we are "dedicated to promoting the knowledge, use and delight of herbs through educational programs, research and sharing the experiences of its members with the community."
There are four unique features threaded throughout the history of our unit: our Herbal Delights Symposium, garden bus tours, garden grants and scholarships, and our unit’s public gardens project. The "Herbal Delights Symposium" is our unit's primary fund raiser and supports all of our local projects.
Our unit meetings are typically held on the third Thursday or Saturday in the months of September through April. In May our members tour a public garden or arboretum. We currently have about seventy members. We have two study groups meeting bi-monthly: Botany and Horticulture, and Herbal Crafts and Products. Our unit gardens are located at the Penn State Berks Campus and the White Horse Tavern and Mouns Jones gardens at Historic Morlattan Village.
The Herb Society of America, Inc. is composed of seven regional membership districts. The Pennsylvania Heartland Unit is located within the Mid-Atlantic District.
